Preparing Amphibians as Scientific Specimens
نویسنده
چکیده
Documentation of the species recorded in biodiversity and inventory projects frequently involves preparation of voucher specimens, which are extremely important for the credibility of such studies (see Chapter 5). In addition, these specimens and their accompanying field notes are valuable sources of scientific information used in systematic, biogeographic, evolutionary, and ecological studies. Most vouchers are preserved specimens from the study site, although photographs of individuals or tape-recorded calls of frogs are sometimes substituted. To be useful as vouchers and to facilitate identifications of species, preserved specimens must be well prepared and well documented. Poorly prepared or improperly documented specimens are of little scientific value and usually not worth the effort of preparation. In this section I review the steps involved in the proper preparation of amphibians as scientific study specimens (for additional discussion, see Pisani 1973; Kams 1986; Simmons 1987).

Reptile and Amphibian Urinary Tract Medicine: Diagnosis and Therapy
The urinary tract includes kidneys, ureters, cloaca, and bladder in reptiles and amphibians. Problem-oriented medicine includes identifying clinical problems, defining diagnoses for each problem, implementing a plan to address each diagnosis, and reformulating the plan as indicated in follow-up evaluations. This paper is intended to serve as an instructional aide for those who are preparing for...
متن کاملP96 Technique for Tissue Plastination in Preparing Long-Lasting Anatomical Specimens
Background: Plastination is a technique of long-term preservation of the natural tissues without the typical problems related to wet specimens. Plastinated specimens are durable, dry, and flexible. In this process, the water and fat in biological tissues are substituted by a curable polymeric resin, i.e., subsequently cured. In this study, a new unsaturated polyester resin (P96) was synthesized...
متن کاملSexual dimorphism in digit length ratios of the second to fourth digits (2D:4D) in two species of green toads (Pelobates syriacus Boettger, 1889 and Bufo viridis (Laurenti, 1768))
Sexual dimorphism in the ratio of digits length is a morphological feature resulted from the interaction between sex hormones and prenatal Hox genes, the latter is known to control the development of both limbs and genitals. The status of this trend and ratios have been investigated in various animal groups, including humans, other mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. In this study, the bo...
متن کاملDynamics of habitat changes as a result of climate change in Zagros Mountains Range (Iran), a case study on Amphibians
Climate change is currently considered a serious threat for many species and recognized as one of the most important factors in the global biodiversity loss. Among animal groups, amphibians are known to be among the most sensitive groups of vertebrates to climate change due to their inability to travel long distances, and mountain habitat species are more exposed to climate change pressures tha...
متن کاملFixing Formalin: A Method to Recover Genomic-Scale DNA Sequence Data from Formalin-Fixed Museum Specimens Using High-Throughput Sequencing
For 150 years or more, specimens were routinely collected and deposited in natural history collections without preserving fresh tissue samples for genetic analysis. In the case of most herpetological specimens (i.e. amphibians and reptiles), attempts to extract and sequence DNA from formalin-fixed, ethanol-preserved specimens-particularly for use in phylogenetic analyses-has been laborious and ...
